Forthcoming Book: “Why Johnny Can’t Sing Hymns”
Tom Ascol linked to this blog post from Union Univ. prof Ray Van Neste (who has a GREAT blog on kids literature). The dumbing down of our culture has had more impact than we would like to admit. But, the truth seems unavoidable. Be sure to read the linked interview, you’ll be glad you did. One salient quote from the post:
we as a culture no longer notice inferior art, because we are surrounded by it.
HSLDA: Sweden Set to Bar Homeschooling
A law set for vote in Sweden would disallow homeschooling except in “extraordinary circumstances”. For more, follow the HSLDA alert here.
A new law which would allow home education only under “extraordinary circumstances” is awaiting finishing touches before it is brought before the entire Swedish Parliament. Unfortunately, the new restrictive law is expected to pass. The Swedish Supreme Administrative Court has completed its obligatory review of the law and simply asked the Parliament to clarify the meaning of “extraordinary circumstances.”
2009 GfBC FIC Conference
Semper Reformanda. Always Reforming.
Be sure to check out the updated registration page for this years GfBC FIC Conference. If years past are any indication, this is one conference that you can count on to give you real answers and practical helps as you think through what a Biblical relationship between the church and the home look like.
Voddie on SermonAudio.com
In an effort to find new ways to encourage folks, I want to commend a link to you for your favorites, podcast list, or at least – frequent checking. You should check out GfBC/Voddie Baucham’s SermonAudio page.
I’ve included a great message from Resurrection Sunday. It’s a fabulous primer on the Law/Gospel perspective that all Christians should have on the Law of God. It is worth every minute spent listening.
Can’t Get Enough Voddie?
If you, like me, could listen to Dr. Voddie T. Baucham, Jr all day long…here’s your chance. It’s not a new page, but I’m always surprised at how few people are aware it exists. Monergism.com has pages for modern-day reformers like Voddie. Here’s his link. I think there’s enough there to keep you going for a few days. If you finish those, head on over to the GfBC Podcast link. That’s a newer link that is going to grow in the future. Happy listening!
Made-to-Order Babies?
Dr. Albert Mohler is a great source of wisdom and worldview for believers. He posted an article about the arrival of the age of “Designer Babies”. It is unthinkable that we could look at the Imago Dei, the image of God in man, and decide that even here, we would rather mar His beauty and enthrone our self-love by attempting to outsmart Providence. I fear that we will suffer consequences even Dr. Frankenstein couldn’t have stomached. Ethically speaking, we are crossing into creating men in our own image, instead of God’s. I’ll let Dr. Mohler do the work of clarification, but I do want to commend to you Ethics for a Brave New World by Feinberg & Feinberg which has a lengthy chapter (Ch. 10) on this topic and the moral/ethical dilemmas incumbent with them.
Dr. Mohler does give a helpful quote that serves to jolt us back to reality as we think on these things. Fallen man has no business enthroning himself as deity and creator & destroyer of life:
We have seen this logic before, but we appear to have missed the moral lesson. We can only imagine what the scientists of the Nazi regime would have done with this technology.
The brave new world of designer babies is about to be upon us. We will soon learn what, in moral terms, we really believe about human dignity and the value of human life.
Narnia is not Over!
Just in the nick of time. Those of us who are lovers of Narnia and Lewis-philes should rejoice that the Narnia movie project has been saved. It was given up on by Disney, but Fox came to the rescue. There’s a good article explaining the whole backstory here.
